RHEL 6 gets top security certification

11/01/2012 | Security |

The security of data stored on corporate networks is a high priority for any business at the current time. The amount of threats firms have to deal with has been growing hugely in recent years, driven by new platforms and technologies. In fact, according to data from McAfee released recently, the second quarter of 2012 saw the biggest increase in detected malware for four years. The security firm uncovered nearly 100,000 new threats a day over the period, many of which are aimed at businesses.

So with this in mind, it's clear that you need to take steps to minimise your risk. And when it comes to securing your data center and dedicated servers, one thing you can do is ensure you choose an operating system with a proven record of good security. Therefore, one option might be Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6. Red Hat announced recently that this operating system (OS) has received the Common Criteria Certification at Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4+ for its security. This is the highest level of assurance for an unmodified commercial OS.

Having this certification could be an especially high priority for organisations operating in security-sensitive environments. Government agencies and financial institutions are among the bodies that will need this high level of protection, but all businesses can rest assured they will be getting a robust product of they select RHEL 6 to control their servers. Common Criteria's standards are recognised internationally as a comprehensive assessment of the security capabilities of a technology product. A 4+ EAL rating should give consumers full confidence in the strength of the system.

It was noted by Red Hat that the latest certification is the 15th completed Common Criteria assessment for the RHEL system and earns the company a place at the very top of the industry. The firm added: "We've been deeply committed to security certifications so that customers can confidently turn to Red Hat for the expertise to deploy open source solutions at maximum security levels."
