Will your company be part of the digital content revolution?

11/08/2012 | Internet hosting |

As broadband speeds increase and people spend more time online, they are increasingly turning to the web as a source for content they would have once purchased from traditional shops. Digital is slowly but surely taking over as the dominant form of distributing films, games, music and even news, and data from Forrester indicates the trend is only set to continue over the years to come. The research firm expects the number of online content buyers in Western Europe to rise by between eight and 12 per cent over the next five years, while revenue generated from selling content online by firms like record labels and movie studios will rise to €10.2 billion in 2017 - a 65 per cent increase on this year's figure of €6.2 billion. Forrester sees online video as one of the biggest markets - it expects 60 per cent of video purchased to be in a digital format by 2017 - while subscribers to music streaming services will double and the number of online game buyers will rise by 27 per cent as customers eschew disk-based purchases in favour of acquiring software through their broadband connection.

Furthermore, it predicts a fifth of tablet users to be paying for news to be delivered to their device in five years' time, as they ditch newspapers and magazines in favour of digital alternatives. Demand is set to be driven by increased usage of streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify, but providing digital content over the web is not reserved for big industry players - any company big or small can take advantage of the flexibility the web has to offer and provide their output online.

Of course, businesses interested in doing so will need access to a fast web server to host their content and ensure customers can access it quickly and easily, as an unreliable service will quickly become lost among a host of competitors.
