Virtualisation, cloud among small firms' IT priorities

11/15/2012 | Data centers |

Over the past few years, the IT industry has seen several major developments that could have a huge impact on how firms operate, offering new ways to streamline processes and make companies more efficient. This means it could be a busy time for IT managers at small firms, as there are a range of options available for improving their systems. And as a new survey has shown budgets in this department are on the increase, there is the potential for many firms to investigate advanced networking solutions that will boost their data center performance.

Research by community website Spiceworks has suggested that for small and medium-sized enterprises, available capital has increased by 7% since the first half of 2012. It also suggested a large part of this may go on tools such as virtualisation and cloud services, which are said to show strong potential for growth. Around three-quarters of small companies anticipate they will use the cloud in the first six months of 2013, with 64% already doing so. Among this, Spiceworks noted particularly popular services during the next year will include web hosting, email hosting and data backup.

Server virtualisation is also increasingly popular among businesses, which may lead to more companies using software such as VMWare on their dedicated servers to increase their options and gain greater control over their networks. According to Spiceworks' survey, nearly two-thirds of small businesses have already deployed server virtualisation, with an additional 14% expected to adopt the tools in the first half of 2013.

The survey may be good news for the IT industry, as it was noted this demonstrates innovation is alive and well, with many companies keen to get on board with the latest technologies. Spiceworks observed this will drive IT departments to make more investments in order to improve their activities. As a result if this, it will be vital that you keep up-to-date with the latest developments in the sector and understand how they may have a positive effect on your firm. Fail to do this and you may find you get left behind by more tech-savvy rivals.
