Get ready for the 'third platform' in your IT activities

12/03/2012 | Data centers |

With 2012 drawing to a close, it's traditional at this time of year for analysts in the tech industry to look forward to some of the trends that can expected to be seen in the next 12 months. This is something all firms need to be paying close attention to, as if you don't know where the latest technologies are going, how can you react fast enough to stay at the pinnacle of your sector?

Therefore you might want to look closely at the forecast from one analysis organisation, International Data Corporation (IDC), as this company has identified several key trends that it said will have a huge impact on company data centers. According to the organisation, 2013 will be the year of what it called the 'third platform' for IT operations, which it defined as an increasing reliance on hosted solutions such as cloud computing, mobility, social tools and big data analytics. These tools are set to account for 90 per cent of all growth in the IT market between 2013 and 2020 and so are clearly not something businesses can afford to overlook.

In fact, it was stated by IDC that companies will need to dedicate at least 80 per cent of their competitive energies into these markets to prevent themselves relying on outdated legacy systems, which will see them fall behind their rivals. IDC noted these developments will inevitably have an impact on firms' data centers. The company said: "Converged systems and software-defined networking will transition from market hype to market reality in 2013 with enterprise data center and cloud-provider use cases coming to market and getting deployed."

With investment in big data technologies and services also set to grow to nearly $10 billion (€7.67 billion) in 2013, it's clear that businesses are going to need solutions in place to cope with the ever-increasing amount of information they're expected to deal with. Therefore, it could be hugely beneficial for firms to utilise dedicated servers that can be tailored to their unique requirements and upgraded quickly and easily whenever necessary.
