Why you need the right backup systems in place

12/04/2012 | Data centers |

No-one wants to have to deal with a worst-case scenario in their data centers, but it's something that you're going to have to plan for if you don't want to be left with a catastrophic loss of data. There are many reasons why you might be facing a serious data loss - from hacking attacks and hardware failure to human error, but if you have the right backup and recovery procedures in place, you can at least be sure that you'll be able to work through any issues so they don't deal a fatal blow to a company.

Some of the factors you might have to deal with have been highlighted this week by Kroll Ontrack, which has published its 2012 top ten list of data disasters. Among the most significant incidents the firm dealt with over the past 12 months included recovering data from water and acid-damaged hard drives and servers that had been the victims of malware attacks.

In one case, a fired employee took revenge on his firm by accessing their network through a firm's open Wi-Fi service and deleting all the data he could find. In another, an IT department chose to ignore warning lights on their servers informing them that one of the drives had failed. Within a few weeks, the problem spread to a second drive, leaving the data inaccessible. The firm said: "Despite best efforts to prevent disasters, data loss still happens due to hardware failure, software corruption, computer viruses, natural disasters and of course human error."

The range of problems highlighted by Kroll Ontrack show you can't prepare for every eventuality that might cause problems for your dedicated servers. But by taking advantage of tools such as the automated backup software offered by, you can at least rest assured such problems will usually be recoverable.
