Is your small business' website secure?

12/05/2012 | Security |

Whether you're running a large company or a small enterprise with just a few employees, it's essential these days for you to have a website. But, with the number of threats online on the rise, you need to make sure it's protected. For less-sizeable firms, this could be more of a challenge than for larger companies that can afford to spend time and resources on this area. However, there are still a few vital steps you need to take to protect your web hosting, as this is often where breaches begin.

It was noted by CIO.com that some solutions commmonly used by small firms, such as WordPress, are prone to hacker attacks, so it's important preventative measures are taken. One suggestion for securing a WordPress installation is to use a virtual private network, which offers many features for protecting a site. The website added one tool that you shouldn't be without is cPanel, as this makes it much easier to perform database backup to keep your information safe, should the worst happen.

CIO.com added: "When you upload files to the server, use the Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP). It's important to use strong passwords and change them regularly. If your SFTP programs allow for it, use all the available characters on your keyboard and use password combinations of 16 characters or more." To help with this, the publication noted using a password protection program such as LastPass or Roboform could be a good idea, as it allows you to keep track of all your login details. For growing businesses, this will surely be highly useful, as you'll soon find it tough to manage all your passwords, particularly if you're following best practice and changing them regularly.

Having a good antivirus program is obviously also essential and CIO.com picked out several freeware options that could be useful to small firms on tight budgets. AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials were both noted to be good for preventing spyware, while Malwarebytes was said to be better at deep-level searches for hidden programs and CCleaner was highlighted as the most stable registry cleaner.
