Microsoft aiming for 'Cloud OS' future

11/30/2012 | Data centers |

If you're looking at the latest version of Windows Server at a basis for your data center, who may need to consider how the product will fit into a future business environment where much of a firm's data and applications are stored online.

It's been noted by Windows IT Pro that Microsoft is pushing heavily towards cloud solutions with its latest line of products, which as well as Windows Server 2012, include the Windows 8 desktop operating system and Office 2013. These all have many more features than in the past to make it easier for firms to get on board with the cloud.

This can be very useful for many businesses as the cloud trend becomes more widespread. The cloud's lower costs and ease of use could be huge advantages for enterprises can see from adopting the tools, particularly at a time when the pressure is on IT departments to do more with smaller budgets.

Microsoft's moves to support this might therefore be welcomed, as it can make things easier for firms. Windows IT Pro noted many innovations first introduced on the cloud-based Windows Azure are now being implemented on Windows Server 2012.

General manager of the Azure project Bill Hull told the publication that even though Azure was originally based in Windows Server technology, the way it has evolved on its own has led to positive developments for both products - something he called a "virtuous loop".

The publication added that Microsoft's focus on cloud technology is forward-looking and exciting for the industry, it's good that the firm has recognised transitions are a gradual process and so is not trying to force the change on customers all at once.

In fact, it was noted Microsoft is continuing to invest in its traditional products, such as Windows server, while adding hybrid features that enable them to interact, often seamlessly, with services-based offerings. This might be good news for firms that want to get involved with the latest technology, but that are unwilling to fully commit to the cloud at this stage.
