New technologies becoming common in data centers

04/10/2013 | Data centers |

The evolving data center environment has seen several major changes in the last few years, with more business users looking to take advantage of some of the latest technologies. This is according to a recent survey conducted by Information Week, which asked enterprises how they are looking to improve the database solutions that sit at the heart of their IT operations.

What it found was while most firms aren't yet ready to go all-in on technology such as virtualisation and the cloud, the fact these tools are more widely available gives organisations a much wider range of options when it comes to setting up data center solutions.

Growing interest
The study revealed database virtualisation within data centers is becoming more popular. 43% of respondents said they're now using this technology on their primary database - an increase of six percentage points from last year.

It also found 16% of companies have looked to migrate all their operations to cloud computing solutions, which may eliminate the need to have on-premises data centers altogether. Another key trend is the growth of big data and analytics. Hadoop-based tools were found to be particularly popular among firms looking to do more in this area, with 91% of such firms stated they are considering, piloting or already using the innovation.

Open-source popular
It was also noted that open-source solutions are also more popular than ever. Many firms may be attracted to this as they can offer capabilities that are the equal of powerful commercial options, but could cost businesses a fraction of the price.

Information Week observed the proof of this can be seen in the fact that nine out of the world's top ten most-visited websites rely on MySQL to power all or part of their databases in order to keep their sites operating effectively.

The study also suggested the use of new technologies such as object-relational mapping for databases are giving businesses more flexibility when it comes to choosing their data center technology. It was observed this makes databases more interchangeable, meaning firms no longer have to be locked into a particular solution for the life of an application.
